About this mod

Changes the Kodama from white to black. Two variants: One that keeps the decals and one that blacks them out for those stealthy builds!

Permissions and credits
Description

Once the Kodama has some mods installed, it looks pretty great -- almost like it was inspired by a Vector. The only problem is that being a stealthy build, the white would give me away in a heartbeat. So, I made a couple black versions. Includes recolors for all attachments as well!

Note: The screenshots might be a little washed out and might not fully convey the color accurately since I play on an HDR monitor and the conversion to an SDR screenshot is tricky (I didn't try very hard to color correct).

Before you get started

I'm still learning how to mod in general, so if I miss something let me know.

I am also unlikely to provide troubleshooting. This is a very simple mod. If it does not work, it's probably covered by the instructions.

Instructions

These instructions are universal for both Steam and the Microsoft Store/Xbox Game Pass versions of the game.

Vortex might have trouble with texture mods due to the variety of locations mods can exist. For the moment, I can only recommend installing texture mods manually.

  1. Choose only one variant of this mod. You can replace the variant later, but you can only have one installed at one time.
  2. Extract/unzip the contents of your chosen color variant.
  3. Copy the entire data folder
  4. Go to the following folder on your PC:
  5. C:\Users\[username]\Documents\My Games\Starfield
  6. Paste the data folder. If there's already a data folder here, it will merge them together so don't worry. Your folder structure should now look like:
  7. C:\Users\[username]\Documents\My Games\Starfield\Data\Textures\Weapons\kodama
  8. Back in the Starfield folder, look for the file called StarfieldCustom.ini and open it in Notepad. If you do not have this file, look at the instructions below.
  9. If you've installed other mods, it's possible you already have these lines added. If not, add the following lines underneath anything that currently exists:
  10. [Archive]
    bInvalidateOlderFiles=1
    sResourceDataDirsFinal=
  11. Play the game.

Creating an INI file

If you do not have an StarfieldCustom.ini file, follow these instructions.

  1. Open Notepad.
  2. Click File > Save
  3. Navigate to:
  4. C:\Users\[username]\Documents\My Games\Starfield
  5. Type the following into the file name:
  6. StarfieldCustom.ini
  7. Change the Save as type drop down to All files. Ensure you have changed this from .txt!
  8. Click Save

Uninstalling

  1. Go to the following folder:
  2. C:\Users\[username]\Documents\My Games\Starfield\Data\Textures\weapons\
  3. Delete any of the following folders.
  4. kodama

FAQ

Does this affect all the mods/attachments on the gun?

Yep! Every color has been modified in some way.

Changelog

[version 1.1]
  • Added two more variants:
- Darker Default Colors
- Mostly Black with Decals
  • Both versions are releases in an attempt to solve for the overly flat looking textures of the original and project more depth/reflect more light in a realistic fashion.

[version 1.0]
  • Initial release with two variants:
  • - Black with decals
    - Black without decals
