Guide on how to put the Data folder back in your Game folder and make it stay there !

Permissions and credits
Hello fellow modders !

This has been said many times I guess, but I thought it would be convenient to have all the information in one easy to find place.
May I suggest the fix for the Document folder issue ?
I assume you all want to mod your Starfield game just as easy as your Skyrim or Fallout game ? ( or is it Skyfield and Fallfield ? )

With this proven method you will fix it !!1one

The problem is that the game is putting your data folder in Documents \ My Games \ Starfield and / or in your Game folder for some reason.
The underlying issue is that your Documents \ My Games \ Starfield sits on the same drive as your OS and most of us don't want that.
Removing the data folder doesn't seem to work, it keeps coming back for some users especially when they use the in-game Photo Mode.

Now, try these steps below and you will never have to worry again where stuff gets placed and what data folder you should use.
You can let Vortex / MO2 do the job for you and you can focus on modding the game until you break it :)

Let's get started

1.    To prevent the game recreating the data folder over and over again, you must take care of two things.
That's  a) get rid of the message of the day window in the title screen and b) tell the in-game Photo Mode where to put the photos.
Because as soon as you use any of the two, the game recreates the data folder again inside your Documents folder.

2.    So, move your data folder from the Documents folder to the game folder. So it's there where it always is.
( you might consider redownloading all your mods again via your mod manager of choice so they are better manageable )

3a.  If you already have a StarfieldCustom.ini in your Documents \ My Games \ Starfield folder you can add these lines to it :

3b.  If you do not have a StarfieldCustom.ini in your Documents \ My Games \ Starfield folder you can create one with this code inside :

4. That's it, you're done, finished.

Now every time you download a mod it will put any file that belongs in the data folder in the right place without recreating that darn data folder !
Even if you use the Photo thingy in-game because your Photos will still be placed inside your Documents \ My Games \ Starfield folder, but it will have it's own Photo folder (thanks for the tip gadman85).

Happy gaming and if you have any questions, feel free to ask.
Cheers !
